Mutual Aid & Grassroots Networks

Many communities rely on grassroots and informal networks to meet urgent needs. There may be opportunities to get involved through mutual aid networks, food distribution efforts, neighborhood action teams, or other groups that aren’t often listed on volunteer platforms.

  • Pull Over Prevention

Pull Over Prevention (POP) is an effort to empower motorists – especially people of color and immigrants in our community – to avoid unsafe discriminatory interactions with law enforcement. Police and immigration officers use minor automotive issues as reasons to stop, search, fine, and deport people. POP volunteers provide repair and advice for these issues, share repair skills, and promote access to local resources. We host Pull Over Prevention Clinics & Mutual Aid Fairs in Ypsilanti and the surrounding area.

  • Washtenaw Area Mutual Aid Council

In emergency services, mutual aid is an agreement among responders to provide assistance across jurisdictional boundaries when incidents exceed local resources, such as large-scale disasters or multiple-alarm fires.

  • The Mutual Aid Network of Ypsilanti

The MANY was created in 2019. Our goal is to build long-term community relationships that could help alleviate our conditions under oppression and build power towards direct democracy, cooperation, and collective liberation among marginalized people. We are both a loose community support network and a worker self-directed 501(c)(3) organization. We focus on “solidarity, not charity” when working with our neighbors. Instead of a top down charity approach, we build real relationships from the bottom up – power to the people who live in the struggle!
