Volunteer in MTSU Stormwater Program

To maintain and improve the quality of local water bodies by conducting public education, implementing best management practices, and providing regulatory enforcement to prevent uncontrolled stormwater runoff and decrease the pollutants within Middle Tennessee State region.

MTSU Stormwater Program: MTSU is co-permitting with the City of Murfreesboro to protect local streams and water quality.

This program helps educate citizens and comply to Federal regulations under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). Municipal storm sewer systems are required to reduce community water pollution under permits mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency under the Clean Water Act of 1972 and in our state administered by the Tennessee Department of Conservation. Stormwater is water from rain and snow events that runs off solid surfaces like streets, construction sites, parking lots, buildings, and other impervious areas, and goes directly into storm drains and eventually into our local streams and rivers. Storm water can pick up pollutants along the way and is carried directly to streams and rivers without being treated by the local wastewater treatment plant. MTSU’s program that seeks to protect our surface waters from these types of pollutants. The conveyances (pipes, ditches) that carry this runoff is called a MS4 (municipal separate storm sewer) system.

MTSU’s Stormwater Program includes components for the community at large, including businesses and civic groups through public education, outreach, and various ways to include them in participation and involvement.
