About

We are a small organization committed to helping foster and kinship families meet the needs of children and teens in their care. We receive clothing, baby equipment, toys, books, and bedding from donors and provide it to people who are taking care of foster children and children of relatives and friends, as well as families living in shelters and children who have experienced abuse. We also try to help other very needy families with children. Everything we offer is free.

The Foster Closet, a project of the Center for Sustainable Living, has expanded to include the Foster Help Initiative. We are working with several foster care agencies to support foster families in Monroe County. Supporting a foster family in small or big ways can mean more stable placements and happier outcomes. Opportunities for volunteers include:

  • mentoring foster children: playing with, reading to, helping with homework, teaching a skill …
  • helping a foster family with household tasks: grocery shopping, laundry, yardwork …
  • helping with craft and game times for foster children once a month on a Sunday afternoon
  • helping prepare and deliver meals to foster families
  • helping prepare and deliver “care packages” to foster families when a new child enters their care, and also from time to time as a thank you from the community
  • soliciting donations of craft supplies and gift cards to restaurants and other businesses that we can add to our care packages
