Craven Literacy Council and our specially trained volunteer tutors provide free, confidential, individualized tutoring services to adults of Craven, Jones and Pamlico counties. We offer instruction in:
- Adult basic literacy
- English as a Second Language for non-native speakers of English
- Computer and internet use
Adults with low literacy skills do not have the full range of economic, employment, social and personal choices which are available to people with higher levels of literacy. To improve literacy of area adults, Craven Literacy Council:
- Provides free one-on-one and small group literacy instruction to adults
- Develops individualized curriculum based on each student’s abilities and goals
- Conducts new tutor training workshops leading to ProLiteracy certification for tutors
- Offers continuing education to tutors and students through mentoring, training and computer labs
- Advocates to increase public awareness of literacy through community events
